Year 12 Biologists Complete Vital Fieldwork at Bayfordbury

Our Year 12 Biology students recently swapped the school labs for the Hertfordshire countryside, heading to the University of Hertfordshire’s specialist Bayfordbury Campus. Spanning three days to accommodate different classes, this essential trip allowed students to step out of the classroom and complete their mandatory A-Level ecological fieldwork.

The primary focus of the day was a hands-on investigation into how specific environmental factors influence the distribution of living species. Working alongside university staff and the LAET Biology team, students spent several hours collecting independent data in the long grass and diverse habitats on site. This active data collection allowed the cohorts to put the ecological theories, sampling techniques, and practical skills they have been learning in lessons directly into practice.

Beyond fulfilling a vital exam board requirement, the day offered our biologists a fantastic opportunity to experience field science in action. Navigating the outdoor terrain, managing their own equipment, and analysing real-world data provided students with a taste of university-level research. The group returned to school with completed practical portfolios and a much stronger understanding of how ecological systems function in the wild.
